NBI ASSOCIATES - HOPE Program 2013
NBI ASSOCIATES - DEVELOPMENT

THE HOPE PROGRAM
Delivering Diversity  - Enhancing Equality

An accessible, interactive and inclusive program which is suitable for both staff and students within any educational environment.

The HOPE Program offers opportunities for staff and students to explore and celebrate their own uniqueness and is invaluable in that it can create a forum for the development of real and measurable cultural enhancement in terms of recruitment, retention, achievement and progression.

This program uses, as a starting point, the Equality Act 2010, and ensures that all members of your community gain knowledge and understanding of the importance of creating a safe and respectful space for everyone within your community.

The aims of this program are to:

  1. Encourage a sense of community amongst the student body
  2. Cover key concepts in a fast-paced, fun and interactive way
  3. Ensure a standardised delivery of diversity education.
  4. Offer strategies for embedding E & D into lesson planning

There is great potential for flexible delivery through interactive arts activities and, although suitable for all age groups, the program will be tailored to suit specific learners.

UNIT ONE is most relevant and accessible for younger learners.

UNITS ONE & TWO are beneficial for Secondary, Post-16 and Staff CPD.

GUIDED BUT NOT PRESCRIPTIVE

Each short module contains a variety of INTERACTIVE and ADAPTABLE activity options which can be delivered at a level suitable for all learners AND to suit individual teaching styles and environments.

This program may form the foundations of a larger cross-department Pro-Equality initiative to engage with the local community throughout the academic year, culminating in a community-wide festival in the Summer Term.

UNIT ONE is in 5 parts and is an introduction to key terms and concepts:

A.   FEELINGS & EMPATHY
B.   ACTIONS & CONSEQUENCES
C.   STEREOTYPING & LIMITING LABELLING
D.   DIVERSITY & DISCRIMINATION
E.   HARASSMENT & VICTIMISATION

UNIT TWO is in 10 parts:

A. Introducing the EQUALITY ACT 2010 – What it means for YOU (Interactive exploration to illustrate how the Act affects us all)
B. - J. Each covering a “Protected Characteristic” and designed to be delivered at a time to coincide with national or international days in the Diversity Calendar.

The entire program may be delivered over two days but is also available as an on-going series of workshops throughout the academic year and with support towards the planning, preparation and execution of your Pro-Equality Community Festival.

RECENT FEEDBACK

David has a wealth of experience delivering training, teaching and learning to a wide age group and in a variety of contexts. This is evident in his delivery style which is inclusive, supportive and also 'challenging' to encourage learners to think and develop. David's enthusiastic, committed and passionate ethos towards E&D and inclusivity has led to a range of inspirational training sessions. David has won the hearts and minds of staff in two very different contexts (one a tertiary college and the other a land-based college 15 miles apart).

In addition to the well-planned and structured sessions for academic staff, David has responded to the needs of business support staff and delivered a series of differentiated respect sessions, to meet their needs. The impact of the sessions is evident in both classroom based activities and tutorials. The feedback from which has been overwhelmingly positive.

Good - An enjoyable session, with knowledgeable leads. As this is a subject taught to all learners this will help to embed any knowledge they currently have.
Good - I enjoyed this session. Good inclusion amongst staff. As I mentioned during the session, it would be good if we can access useful short film sequences on the relevant subjects to spark off discussions amongst the students. I think getting the students to discuss the issues is the key point in all this!
Excellent - It was a good introduction to the equality act 2010 and it is reassuring to know that there are resources available to be able to deliver this topic during the tutorial lessons.

Good - Interesting topic. I will definitely be using the presentation for the new students in September. Great for awareness and what is acceptable and what is not!
Good - rather fun session but as this is embedded into everything I teach it was revision rather than learning something new.
